Prairie Road Organic Seed, located in Fullerton, North Dakota, is an organic seed grower and supplier committed to the development of regional vegetable and grain seeds. Each year, their 480 acre farm dedicates 6-8 acres to growing regional vegetable seeds. Second generation owners Theresa and Dan Podoll believe that the seed business is an extension of regional food systems and that “just as we need local food, we need local seeds”. The family is working to create an alternative system that speaks directly to the needs of farmers and gardeners that they believe the commercial seed industry does not address.
“We believe in cooperation rather than competition, whether we are talking about our family, our community, the crops, or our relationship with the earth…” Theresa Podoll
Theresa’s favorite seed to produce is the tomato, as evidenced by the fact that a third of the seed varieties they offer are tomatoes! Nearly their entire collection of tomato seeds is being offered for sale this year at our West 7th store including favorites such as Amish Paste and Brandywine. We are also carrying some more unusual ones this year like Caro Rich, Crimson Sprinter, Fargo Yellow Pear, Koralik, and Oregon Spring. These five varieties all happen to be suitable for container gardening too, perfect for indoor gardeners or people with limited access to outdoor growing space in the city.
As you begin to prep for the upcoming growing season, come in and check out our Prairie Road Organic Seed offerings. In addition to tomato seeds, we’ll also be selling a variety of their other organic seeds, including Sweet Dakota Bliss Beet, Dakota Bumble Dry Bean, Dakota Sisters Muskmelon, Dakota Tears Onion, Dakota Black Pop Popcorn, Sweet Dakota Rose Watermelon, and Uncle David’s Dakota Dessert Winter Squash. We are proud to be working with them to get you their products this spring!
We sell Prairie Road’s organic vegetable seeds exclusively at our West 7th store. We also carry vegetable seeds from High Mowing Organic Seeds at our West 7th store in addition to their sprouting seeds at our Selby store. Heirloom and organic seed varieties from Seed Savers Exchange are available at all three of our store locations throughout the spring growing season.
